A committee consisting of a balanced mix of producers, users and general interests wrote and developed the two standards for plywood and OSB. These are Voluntary Product Standard PS 1, Structural Plywood and Voluntary Product Standard PS 2, Performance Standard for Wood-Based Structural-Use Panels. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) acts as an unbiased coordinator and provides editorial assistance to assure technical soundness. Both standards were developed and approved in accordance with procedures of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
PS 2 was the result of a joint U.S./Canadian effort to harmonize performance standards for wood-based structural-use panels such as structural-use plywood, oriented-strand board (OSB), and other composite materials. The comparable standard in Canada is CSA 0325, Construction Sheathing.
